Normally, these two dimensions would never intersect, but having possessed all material substances, the demons are now intruding on the material world.
But among the human race, there are those who can confront such demons - the Exorcists.

Born the spawn of Satan, Rin Okumura decides to hide his origins, and become an exorcist.
He enrolls at the Exorcism Cram School, a training institute for exorcists located on the True Cross Academy grounds. But, his cover is blown during an attack by Amaimon, the King of Earth, and he is revealed to be the son of Satan.
Terrified of Satan’s blue flames, his friends start to distance themselves from Rin…
It is then that someone steals the Left Eye of the Impure King,
sealed away in the deepest part of the academy, and Rin and the others find themselves embroiled in an unexpected crisis…

The collective term for those who live in Gehenna, a realm that mirrors this world, known as Assiah. By possessing life-forms, natural objects, and inorganic substances, they intervene from Gehenna, delivering misfortune onto the human race. This ranges from insignificant mischief to colossal disaster, and also varies depending on that demon’s powers. And the entity that rules over them all, Satan, is now plotting to invade Assiah through Rin.

Although ordinary humans are unable to perceive demons, once they’re infected with Temptaint by demons, they are then able to see them.

Those who possess various exorcism skills, and who are tasked to eradicate demons from Assiah. Many of them are associated with organizations such as the True Cross Order, and they carry out their exorcisms in teams.

In order to become an official exorcist at the Order, one must learn how to combat demons, and earning a title known as Meister. There are five different types of Meister: Knight (an exorcist who’s adept with a sword), Dragoon (an exorcist who uses firearms), Tamer (an exorcist who controls spirits), Aria (an exorcist who uses holy verses and sutras), and Doctor (an exorcist with medical and support skills.)

A massive exorcists’ organization that has been battling demons since the beginning of time. Headquartered in the Vatican, the Order has branches all over the world. The school Rin and the others attend, True Cross Academy, is the Order’s Japan Branch, and Mephisto serves as its Preceptor. There are also numerous bases all across the nation, including the Kyoto Branch Office. The Order is comprised of numerous ranks and titles, led by the Grigori (three Supreme Advisors). Yukio has the rank of Intermediate Exorcist First Class, while Shura is a Senior Exorcist First Class. Angel has been appointed Paladin, making him the highest-ranked exorcist at the time. Upon entering the cram school, Rin was a Page (exorcist-in-training), but after passing his exam, he was promoted to Exwire.

Whenever Rin draws the demon-slaying sword, Kurikara, he becomes engulfed in blue flames. This is the demonic power that Rin inherited from his father, Satan. Along with the flames, Rin’s demonic nature also emerges, and he gains some demonic physical traits as well - his ears turn pointy, and horn-like flames appear above his forehead.

These flames are a powerful weapon that can engulf demons in an instant, but if he activates them for too long, Rin starts to lose all rationality, and is prone to going berserk…

Some members of the Order, such as Mephisto, have a keen interest in these blue flames as a “demon-slaying weapon,” but since they are the same blue flames wielded by Satan when he massacred clergymen during the “Blue Night.” Due to this, there are quite a few exorcists who fear the blue flames, and see Rin as a danger.
